Local Search, Local Script: SEO for Amharic and Afaan Oromoo Queries
Practical keyword research across three scripts, transliteration patterns, and the entity signals Google increasingly relies on for Ethiopian commercial search.
Most Ethiopian search strategies are built from English keyword exports, then translated as an afterthought. That misses how people actually type: mixed-script queries, phonetic transliterations, and locally specific nouns that never appear in a global tool's suggestion list.
Start with query replay, not volume tools. Pull the queries your site already receives — including the zero-volume ones — cluster them by intent, and map each cluster to a single canonical page. In mixed-script markets, one page per intent beats three competing URLs.
Then handle entity clarity: consistent NAP data, an explicit `inLanguage` signal on every localised page, and structured data that states which regions you serve. Google's local understanding is entity-led; ambiguity is a ranking ceiling.
Finally, write for reading, not indexing. Pages that carry a genuine Amharic or Afaan Oromoo version written by a native speaker outperform machine-translated twins on engagement — and engagement is the ranking signal that compounds.
